Opt-out guides

Find out how to remove, restrict or take control of your personal data.

Search UK-focused guides for unwanted accounts, public listings and marketing databases. Follow the official steps, or use TraceErase to prepare and track eligible requests. Not sure which route to take?

You’re searching for organisations. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, and we don’t ask for your name, address or phone number.

What do you want to do?

Filters and A to Z

“Who does the work” is decided for each action. “Handled by TraceErase” appears only where the live managed list says an action is eligible; a listing or a guide never implies it, and eligible doesn’t mean the service is open.

Which route applies to the action you want?

Every entry shows the route for each action, so you know before you start whether you follow the official steps, prepare a request here, or can ask TraceErase to handle it.

Choosing an action and following the right routeTwo choices first, then the entry shows which route applies to that action. The same organisation can have a different route for each action.
  1. Step 1

    Find the organisation

Search by name or other name, or browse a category. A listing means only that it is in the directory.

  2. Step 2

Choose what you want to do

Close an account, stop marketing, ask for a copy of your data, ask for erasure, correct data, or complain. These are separate actions with separate results.

Step 3

Follow the route the entry shows for that action

    • The organisation

    Needs the plan.

Right now: Checking whether this is available…

  • Use it as a place to start

When: The entry is listed but TraceErase hasn’t checked its route, or the sector is banks, credit, energy, phone or health.

What happens: No steps are shown until a route has been read. For those sectors TraceErase gives no closure or erasure advice, only rights requests.

    • You

Whichever route you take, none of them is a removal. An organisation decides its reply, and TraceErase shows what it said and who vouches for it.

Where to start

  1. Start with what reaches you. If it is calls or post, begin with the preference services: they are free and cover many senders at once.
  2. Then public listings. A listing on a people-finder site can be removed on its own, but that doesn’t remove the source record or any other site.
  3. Then the marketing databases. Ask the organisations that hold audience data to stop using your details for marketing.
  4. Close accounts you no longer use last. Closing an account ends your use of a service. It isn’t the same as asking for everything to be erased.

New to the vocabulary? The plain-English guides explain data requests, marketing objections and complaints, and how TraceErase works shows where the tools fit.

What each choice changes

Preference service registration
Asks members to stop contacting you by one channel. It is a suppression list, not an erasure, and it doesn’t stop scammers or organisations that ignore it.
Marketing objection
Tells one organisation to stop using your details for direct marketing. A small suppression record may remain so it can honour the objection.
Listing removal
Takes down one listing. It doesn’t remove the source record or other sites.
Account closure
Ends the account. Subscriptions, records the organisation must keep and other copies may be separate.
Data access request
Gets you a copy of what the organisation holds. It isn’t a deletion request.
Erasure request
Asks for personal data to be deleted. The right isn’t absolute: credit-reference, fraud-prevention and legal-retention records aren’t ordinary marketing lists.
Browser or device advertising choice
Often narrower than a rights request. It may stop some ads without telling any organisation to stop using your data.

Doing it yourself, or with TraceErase

Many official opt-outs are free to do yourself. TraceErase charges for its actual service and tools, not for your statutory rights.

Everything on this page is free to read without an account. The official links go straight to the organisation. TraceErase doesn’t log in to your accounts and doesn’t hold your passwords.

With a TraceErase account you can keep your cases in one place: prepare a request from a template, record what you sent and when, and see response dates worked out from the dates you enter. For a small set of supported organisations and actions, TraceErase can handle the request for you with a plan, when that service is open to you.

Account creation doesn’t start a purchase. Plans are shown on the pricing page, separately and later.

Questions

Is a listing here proof that an organisation holds my data?

No. A listing means the organisation is in the directory and, where a badge says so, that TraceErase read its own pages on the date shown. It says nothing about whether it holds information about you.

Do I need TraceErase to use the official steps?

No. The steps are the organisation’s own and are free to follow without an account. TraceErase adds tools around them: a place to prepare a request, keep a record of what you sent, and see dates worked out from your own dates.

What does “Checked by TraceErase” mean?

TraceErase read the organisation’s own pages for an action on the date shown, and wrote the route down. It is a dated read of public pages, not a legal opinion and not a test: nobody has signed in to run the flow, so it is not a removal. The organisation may have changed its pages since or may ask you for more. If the date is old, the card says the check is due and you should check the organisation’s own page first.

Why are some well-known names missing?

Because the directory lists only organisations where there is UK relevance and a route that was actually read, or where research is clearly marked as pending. Names with no UK evidence, or whose pages couldn’t be read, aren’t listed as guidance. The wider service directory on the coverage page lists more.

Can TraceErase contact an organisation for me?

Only for the actions that show as “Handled by TraceErase”, and only when that service is switched on. Otherwise the card says managed delivery isn’t open right now and you follow the official steps or prepare the request here. Where an action needs your own step, it says “You complete this step”.

How this directory is built: 429 candidates were examined. Each has a recorded decision. 8 were found not to be UK-relevant and aren’t listed. Others stay off the list until a UK link and an official route have both been read. Part of the wider catalogue comes from a community directory (MIT licence); TraceErase’s reviewed guidance is separate.
