How to cancel your Netflix account and ask for your data to be removed

Route checked by TraceErase on · Page last updated

On this page

The short answer

The reviewed Netflix route for closing an account is cancelling the membership. Access ends when the paid period ends, and Netflix says it keeps viewing activity, ratings, account details and game history for 24 months afterwards so you can restart. A separate Netflix article on deleting the account was referenced but could not be read, so this page does not describe an account-deletion flow. TraceErase read Netflix’s help articles and privacy statement on 7 October 2026 and has not signed in to run any flow.

Before you start

Netflix is a membership service, so leaving usually starts with cancelling billing. In the reviewed record, cancelling is the only closure step, and it is not the same as erasing the data attached to the account.

This page covers the Netflix membership account. Profile deletion is a separate, smaller action and does not close the account.

Netflix’s corporate information page names Netflix Services UK Limited and Netflix International B.V. as joint controllers for UK members.

No official page read confirms a delete account button, so this page does not describe one.

  • Cancel the membership. If you are billed through a payment partner such as an app store, you must cancel with that partner instead.
  • Know when access ends. Access ends when the paid period ends after cancelling.
  • Remember the 24 months. Netflix says it keeps viewing activity, ratings, account details and game history for 24 months after closure so you can restart.
  • Ask for a copy first if you want one. The reviewed access route uses a request my information option while signed in.
  • Look for the confirmation email. Netflix sends one after you confirm cancellation.

Cancelling is not erasing

Cancelling stops billing and ends access at the end of the paid period. It does not delete your data. Netflix says it keeps account details and viewing data for 24 months so that you can restart.

For removal, Netflix’s deletion and retention help page refers account deletion to a separate article, which was not read, so a deletion route has not been reviewed yet. For other removals it points to the privacy email address, where you say which removal you want. Netflix says it keeps some data as required or permitted by law and gives no timescale.

Access, marketing and correction

The privacy statement describes a request my information option while signed in for copies of your data, with other requests going to the privacy email address. Marketing is controlled through the unsubscribe link or notification settings for each profile, and communications based on matched identifiers are managed in privacy and data settings.

What to expect afterwards

What changes or is lost

  • Access ends when the paid period ends after cancelling.

What may be kept. After closure Netflix keeps viewing activity, ratings, account details and game history for 24 months so you can restart.

What TraceErase does here, and what you do

  • You follow the organisation’s steps above on its own site or app, and send any request yourself. TraceErase does not log in to your accounts, does not hold your passwords and does not send requests to Netflix for you.
  • TraceErase shows the guidance it checked and the date, prepares an editable draft request from a template, and keeps a record of what you sent and when, with provisional response dates worked out from the dates you enter.
  • A directory listing is not proof that you have an account, and following these steps is not proof that the organisation has erased anything. The organisation decides its own reply.
