How to close your Tesco account or leave Clubcard
Route checked by TraceErase on · Page last updated

The short answer
Closing a Tesco account and removing Clubcard are different requests. Tesco’s help article says closing the account is done in the Tesco app with a 6-digit code and also loses Clubcard benefits, while removing Clubcard alone means contacting the Clubcard team and leaves the account open. The article does not say how long closure takes. TraceErase read Tesco’s help articles and privacy policy on 8 October 2026 and has not signed in to run the flow.

Which request do you want?
Closing an account, erasing data, stopping marketing and getting a copy of your data are four different things. This table shows what each one means and whether TraceErase has checked its route for this organisation.
| Request | What it means | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Close the account | Ends your use of the service. It is not the same as asking the organisation to erase everything it holds. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Remove your Clubcard | Removes the Clubcard from your Tesco account. It does not close the account or erase data. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Ask for your data to be erased | A request under UK data protection law to delete personal data. The right is not absolute, and the organisation can keep what it must. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Stop marketing | Asks the organisation to stop using your data for direct marketing. It is separate from closing the account. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Get a copy of your data (SAR) | A subject access request: you ask what the organisation holds about you and for a copy of it. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Correct inaccurate data | Asks the organisation to fix personal data that is wrong. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Complain about how data was handled | A data protection complaint to the organisation, and then to the ICO if you are not satisfied. | Checked by TraceErase |
Before you start
Tesco links its customer account and Clubcard, so what you want matters: leaving the shop account, leaving Clubcard, or asking Tesco to delete personal data. The reviewed routes treat these as separate requests.
The privacy and cookies policy is the policy for Tesco Stores Limited, and it covers the customer account and the Clubcard account.
Tesco Bank, Tesco Insurance, Tesco Mobile and Tesco Pay+ are separate and not covered. The policy says Clubcard data is made available to Tesco Bank, Tesco Insurance and Tesco Mobile, which have their own policies and need their own requests.
The closure help article was last updated in July 2024, so menu names may have changed since.
- Decide what you actually want. Close the account, remove Clubcard only, or ask for personal data to be deleted. Each is a different request.
- Have your phone ready. Closing the account in the app needs sign-in and a 6-digit verification code by text or call.
- Check points and vouchers. If you have points or vouchers, or no app, Tesco says to contact it first. Removing Clubcard cancels unused vouchers and stops points being collected or converted.
- Know what you lose. Closing the Tesco account also loses Clubcard benefits. Removing Clubcard alone means no Clubcard Prices savings and no monthly statement.
- Plan separate requests for linked Tesco businesses. Tesco Bank, Tesco Insurance and Tesco Mobile have their own policies.

Done through the app or support_form. You need to sign in to your account first.
- In the Tesco app, sign in and open your account from the person icon.
- Go to Security and password, then Close Tesco accounts, and read the closure details.
- Request a 6-digit code by text or call and enter it, then confirm closure.
- If you have points or vouchers, or no app, contact Tesco first.

Ask for your data to be erased
Done through email or post. No sign-in is needed.
- Email the data protection address or write to the Dundee address, asking for deletion of your personal data.

Account, Clubcard and erasure are three different requests
- Closing the Tesco account is done in the Tesco app and also loses Clubcard benefits.
- Removing Clubcard means contacting the Clubcard team to take Clubcard off your Tesco account. It does not close the Tesco account and is not an erasure request.
- Erasure is a request to Tesco’s data protection contact asking for your personal data to be deleted. Say which situation applies, for example withdrawn consent or data no longer needed. Tesco’s pages say deletion applies in several situations, not all, and that the address is for data protection queries only.
What Tesco says it keeps
The policy says most data is not kept longer than 7 years after the relationship ends. Complaints are deleted after 4 years, CCTV after 31 days, and purchase records can be kept up to 7 years.
Copies of your data and marketing
For a copy of your data, Tesco’s policy prints a subject access email address. Say the request covers your Tesco account and Clubcard data, and expect to be asked for proof of identity. No response time is stated on the pages read.
Marketing choices are in Your Contact Preferences in your Tesco account. The policy says custom audience advertising is opted out through the same preferences, and opting out of all direct marketing also stops targeted TV advertising.
What to expect afterwards
What changes or is lost
- Closing the Tesco account also loses Clubcard benefits.
- Removing Clubcard alone means no Clubcard Prices savings, no monthly statement, no points collection or conversion, and unused vouchers are cancelled.
What may be kept. The policy says most data is not kept longer than 7 years after the relationship ends. Complaints are deleted after 4 years, CCTV after 31 days, and purchase records can be kept up to 7 years.
Linked accounts. Tesco account and Clubcard are linked. The policy says Clubcard data is made available to Tesco Bank, Tesco Insurance and Tesco Mobile, which have their own policies and need their own requests.
What TraceErase does here, and what you do
- You follow the organisation’s steps above on its own site or app, and send any request yourself. TraceErase does not log in to your accounts, does not hold your passwords and does not send requests to Tesco / Clubcard for you.
- TraceErase shows the guidance it checked and the date, prepares an editable draft request from a template, and keeps a record of what you sent and when, with provisional response dates worked out from the dates you enter.
- A directory listing is not proof that you have an account, and following these steps is not proof that the organisation has erased anything. The organisation decides its own reply.

Questions
What happens to my data when I close my Tesco account?
Tesco says closing the account also loses Clubcard benefits. The policy says most data is not kept longer than 7 years after the relationship ends, and purchase records can be kept up to 7 years.
Is removing Clubcard the same as closing my Tesco account?
No. Removing Clubcard alone does not close the Tesco account and is not an erasure request. It means no Clubcard Prices savings, no monthly statement, no points collection or conversion, and unused vouchers are cancelled.
Does closing my Tesco account erase everything?
Not necessarily. Tesco’s pages say deletion requests apply in several situations, not all, and the retention periods run up to 7 years for most records. An erasure request is a separate step from closing the account.
Who is responsible for my Tesco and Clubcard data?
The privacy and cookies policy is for Tesco Stores Limited and covers the customer account and Clubcard account. Tesco Bank, Tesco Insurance and Tesco Mobile have their own policies.
Keep track of your request
A free TraceErase account includes the directory, request drafts and a case record with dates. A plan is a separate, later choice, and creating an account does not start a purchase.
