How to close your eBay UK account
Route checked by TraceErase on · Page last updated

The short answer
eBay’s help article says closure usually takes about 14 days and can take up to 60 days if there was recent activity. Before you can close, fees must be paid, funds brought to zero, subscriptions cancelled and no bids or transactions left open. eBay says you can ask for the account to be reopened during the closure period if it is in good standing. TraceErase read eBay’s help article and privacy notice on 7 October 2026 but has not signed in to run the flow.

Which request do you want?
Closing an account, erasing data, stopping marketing and getting a copy of your data are four different things. This table shows what each one means and whether TraceErase has checked its route for this organisation.
| Request | What it means | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Close the account | Ends your use of the service. It is not the same as asking the organisation to erase everything it holds. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Ask for your data to be erased | A request under UK data protection law to delete personal data. The right is not absolute, and the organisation can keep what it must. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Stop marketing | Asks the organisation to stop using your data for direct marketing. It is separate from closing the account. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Get a copy of your data (SAR) | A subject access request: you ask what the organisation holds about you and for a copy of it. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Correct inaccurate data | Asks the organisation to fix personal data that is wrong. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Complain about how data was handled | A data protection complaint to the organisation, and then to the ICO if you are not satisfied. | Checked by TraceErase |
Before you start
Because an eBay account can hold fees, funds and open purchases or sales, the help article puts clearing those ahead of the closure request. That makes closing it more involved than leaving a service with no money in it.
Ofcom Online Nation 2025 (May 2025): eBay (retail) 63% (30.7m) of UK online adults (retail visits). This is a retail visits figure, not a count of accounts.
The eBay user privacy notice names eBay (UK) Limited as responsible for most services, and eBay Commerce UK Ltd for seller payment services.
This page covers the eBay UK member account and its linked eBay businesses on the same identity. Other eBay country sites are separate.
- Clear the account first. Pay all fees, bring available funds to zero and cancel subscriptions.
- Close out open items. There must be no open bids and no pending payments, returns, disputes or payouts.
- Check for restrictions. Accounts with active restrictions or below seller standards must contact eBay to close.
- Keep what you need. Feedback and purchase and sales history are lost, so save any records you may need before you close.
- Remember linked businesses. Linked eBay businesses on the same identity, such as the eBay Partner Network, close too.
- Expect to start again if you return. You can no longer sell or use My eBay and must make a new account to use eBay again.

Closure takes time, and reopening is possible only for a while
eBay says closure usually takes about 14 days and can take up to 60 if there was recent activity. After you submit the request, eBay sends a status update within a day to the registered email and eBay Messages.
eBay says you can ask for the account to be reopened during the closure period if it is in good standing. The help article does not describe what happens once the period ends beyond saying that personal data eBay must delete is removed then.
Erasure, access and marketing
In the reviewed route, closing the account is also the erasure route. eBay says personal data it must delete is removed once the closure period ends. It keeps some data for financial, legal, security and tax reasons, along with balances and a record of your request, and may contact you afterwards about those.
For access, the privacy notice points to the eBay Privacy Contact page. That page returned an access error during the review, so its form fields are unconfirmed. eBay says it may charge or refuse manifestly unfounded or excessive requests.
Marketing messages are controlled in My eBay under Communication Preferences, or with the unsubscribe link in a marketing email (changes can take a few days). UK advertising and personalisation choices are on a separate eBay advertising preferences page.
What to expect afterwards
What changes or is lost
- You can no longer sell or use My eBay and must make a new account to use eBay again.
- Feedback and purchase and sales history are lost.
- Linked eBay businesses on the same identity, such as the eBay Partner Network, close too.
Changing your mind. You can ask for the account to be reopened during the closure period if it is in good standing.
What may be kept. eBay keeps some personal data for financial and legal duties, security, legal claims, balances and tax information, and a record of your request.
What TraceErase does here, and what you do
- You follow the organisation’s steps above on its own site or app, and send any request yourself. TraceErase does not log in to your accounts, does not hold your passwords and does not send requests to eBay UK for you.
- TraceErase shows the guidance it checked and the date, prepares an editable draft request from a template, and keeps a record of what you sent and when, with provisional response dates worked out from the dates you enter.
- A directory listing is not proof that you have an account, and following these steps is not proof that the organisation has erased anything. The organisation decides its own reply.

Keep track of your request
