How to delete your TikTok account
Route checked by TraceErase on · Page last updated
On this page
The short answer
TikTok’s privacy policy for the EEA, UK and Switzerland says an account can be deleted in the app. The support article with the exact menus and any waiting period could not be read, so this page cannot say how long deletion takes or whether you can recover the account. TraceErase read the policy and TikTok’s privacy portal on 7 October 2026 and has not signed in to run the flow.
At a glance
- Organisation
- TikTok Technology Limited and TikTok Information Technologies UK Limited (joint controllers)The EEA, UK and Switzerland privacy policy names these two companies as joint controllers for users in those regions.
- What this page covers
- The TikTok app account for users in the UK, using the privacy policy version that covers the EEA, UK and Switzerland. TikTok accounts for other regions follow a different policy.
- How the route was checked
- Checked by TraceErase on 7 October 2026 against the organisation’s own pages (listed under Sources). The signed-in steps have not been run, so menu names can differ from what you see, and the organisation may have changed its pages since. You follow the steps yourself.

Which request do you want?
Closing an account, erasing data, stopping marketing and getting a copy of your data are four different things. This table shows what each one means and whether TraceErase has checked its route for this organisation.
| Request | What it means | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Close the account | Ends your use of the service. It is not the same as asking the organisation to erase everything it holds. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Deactivate temporarily | Hides or pauses the account. Your data is normally kept, so this is not closure or erasure. | Route not checked yet |
| Ask for your data to be erased | A request under UK data protection law to delete personal data. The right is not absolute, and the organisation can keep what it must. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Stop marketing | Asks the organisation to stop using your data for direct marketing. It is separate from closing the account. | Route not checked yet |
| Get a copy of your data (SAR) | A subject access request: you ask what the organisation holds about you and for a copy of it. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Correct inaccurate data | Asks the organisation to fix personal data that is wrong. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Complain about how data was handled | A data protection complaint to the organisation, and then to the ICO if you are not satisfied. | Checked by TraceErase |
Before you start
TikTok is an app-first service, so the reviewed closure route is inside the app rather than on a website.
Ofcom Online Nation 2025 (May 2025): TikTok 56% of UK online adults (app reach). This is an app reach figure, not a count of accounts.
This page follows the privacy policy version for the EEA, UK and Switzerland. It names TikTok Technology Limited and TikTok Information Technologies UK Limited as joint controllers. TikTok accounts for other regions follow a different policy, which names a different company and uses a different request flow.
Unlike some services, no grace period, retention period or list of consequences was found in the pages read. Those are left out here rather than guessed.
- Download your data first if you want to keep it. The policy points to a download your data tool in the app.
- Check which policy applies to you. This page is for UK users under the EEA, UK and Switzerland policy.
- Expect an identity check for web-form requests. TikTok may ask you to verify your identity or account details before acting on an erasure or access request made through the privacy web form.
- Do not assume a restore window. None was found in the pages read, so check what the app tells you before you confirm deletion.
Close the account
Done through the app. You need to sign in to your account first.
- Optionally use the download your data tool in the app first.
- Open the account section of the app and its settings.
- Look for the account deletion option and follow the prompts.

Limits to know about
- The policy only says the account can be deleted in the app; the TikTok support article with exact menus and any waiting period could not be read.
- Authenticated flow not tested.

Limits to know about
- The policy names the Irish Data Protection Commission as lead authority and does not mention the ICO itself.
What has been reviewed and what has not
- Deleting the account: the policy says this can be done in the app. The exact menus and any waiting period come from a support article that could not be read.
- Temporary deactivation: this route has not been reviewed yet. Whether the app offers a separate temporary deactivation was not confirmed.
- Objecting to marketing: this route has not been reviewed yet. The policy states a right to object, but no marketing opt-out mechanism was read.
Erasure and access requests beyond the app
Deleting the account and asking TikTok to erase data are related but not identical. For erasure requests beyond what you can delete yourself in the app, the privacy web form is the reviewed route, and you say what you want deleted. The policy limits some rights to certain circumstances.
For access, the in-app download your data tool comes first. A formal request beyond that goes through the same privacy web form, and you should expect to be asked to verify your identity. The portal page does not say whether sign-in is needed.
If you want to complain, the policy suggests raising the issue with TikTok first. The policy names the Irish Data Protection Commission as lead authority and does not mention the ICO itself, so the guide on following up or complaining explains the UK route.
What to expect afterwards
What TraceErase does here, and what you do
- You follow the organisation’s steps above on its own site or app, and send any request yourself. TraceErase does not log in to your accounts, does not hold your passwords and does not send requests to TikTok for you.
- TraceErase shows the guidance it checked and the date, prepares an editable draft request from a template, and keeps a record of what you sent and when, with provisional response dates worked out from the dates you enter.
- A directory listing is not proof that you have an account, and following these steps is not proof that the organisation has erased anything. The organisation decides its own reply.

Questions
What happens to my data when I delete my TikTok account?
The pages read say only that the account can be deleted in the app. They do not state how long deletion takes, whether there is a waiting period, or what TikTok keeps afterwards, so this page does not guess.
Can I get my TikTok account back after deleting it?
That could not be confirmed. The support article with the exact steps and any waiting period could not be read, so check what the app says before you confirm.
Does deleting my TikTok account erase everything?
The reviewed pages do not say. They describe a separate privacy web form for erasure requests beyond what you can delete in the app, and note that some rights apply only in certain circumstances.
Who is responsible for my TikTok data?
For users in the UK, the EEA and Switzerland, the privacy policy names TikTok Technology Limited and TikTok Information Technologies UK Limited as joint controllers.
Keep track of your request
A free TraceErase account includes the directory, request drafts and a case record with dates. A plan is a separate, later choice, and creating an account does not start a purchase.
