How to close your Amazon UK account (with Audible UK)
Route checked by TraceErase on · Page last updated
On this page
The short answer
Amazon UK’s help describes closing the account as permanent: it cannot be restored, and it applies on every Amazon site that uses the same login. Audible UK help says Audible cannot be closed on its own, so it goes with the Amazon account. You must answer Amazon’s confirmation message within five days or the request is not verified. TraceErase read Amazon UK and Audible UK help pages on 8 October 2026 and has not signed in to run the flow.

- Organisation
- Amazon Europe Core S.a r.l., Amazon EU S.a r.l., Amazon Media EU S.a r.l. and Amazon Digital UK LimitedThe UK privacy notice names these entities together as the controllers it calls Amazon Europe. For Audible, the Audible UK notice names Audible Limited (London) and Audible GmbH as controllers, jointly with other Amazon companies for some processing.
- What this page covers
- The UK Amazon shopping account and the linked Audible UK account. Audible has its own UK privacy notice and controllers. Not AWS or other business accounts. Prime Video and Amazon Music have their own entries but close with the same login.
- How the route was checked
- Checked by TraceErase on 8 October 2026 against the organisation’s own pages (listed under Sources). The signed-in steps have not been run, so menu names can differ from what you see, and the organisation may have changed its pages since. You follow the steps yourself.

Which request do you want?
Closing an account, erasing data, stopping marketing and getting a copy of your data are four different things. This table shows what each one means and whether TraceErase has checked its route for this organisation.
| Request | What it means | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Close the account | Ends your use of the service. It is not the same as asking the organisation to erase everything it holds. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Cancel your Audible membership | Stops Audible billing. It does not close your Amazon account and does not erase any data. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Ask for your data to be erased | A request under UK data protection law to delete personal data. The right is not absolute, and the organisation can keep what it must. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Stop marketing | Asks the organisation to stop using your data for direct marketing. It is separate from closing the account. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Get a copy of your data (SAR) | A subject access request: you ask what the organisation holds about you and for a copy of it. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Correct inaccurate data | Asks the organisation to fix personal data that is wrong. | Checked by TraceErase |
| Complain about how data was handled | A data protection complaint to the organisation, and then to the ICO if you are not satisfied. | Checked by TraceErase |
Before you start
One Amazon login covers a lot. Amazon, Prime Video, Amazon Music, Audible, Kindle, Photos and Alexa share it, so closing the account is a decision about all of them at once.
Ofcom Online Nation 2025 (May 2025): Amazon (retail) 88% (43.2m) of UK online adults (retail visits). This is a retail visits figure, not a count of accounts.
The UK privacy notice names Amazon Europe Core S.a r.l., Amazon EU S.a r.l., Amazon Media EU S.a r.l. and Amazon Digital UK Limited together as the controllers it calls Amazon Europe. For Audible, the Audible UK notice names Audible Limited (London) and Audible GmbH, jointly with other Amazon companies for some processing.
This page covers the UK Amazon shopping account and the linked Audible UK account. It does not cover AWS or other business accounts. If you have more than one Amazon account, closure must be repeated for each.
- Download invoices and photos. Order history, invoices and proofs of purchase are lost on closure, as is anything stored in Amazon Photos.
- Request a copy of your data first if you want one, including Audible data. Pick Audible in the request if you want that data.
- Cancel Audible separately if you only want billing to stop. Closing the whole Amazon account is much larger than cancelling a membership.
- Know what goes with the account. Prime memberships, Kindle content, Photos, Alexa registrations, gift card balances and the Audible profile, credits and library are all lost.
- Watch for the confirmation message. Reply within five days or the request is not verified.
- Expect the effect on every Amazon site. Closure applies on every Amazon site using the same login.

- Open the Close Your Amazon Account page linked from the help article and sign in to the account you want to close.
- Review the products and services listed as tied to the account.

- Reply to the confirmation email or text within five days or the request is not verified.
The organisation’s own page (opens in a new tab)
Limits to know about
- This is the Amazon account closure; Audible UK help says Audible cannot be closed on its own and goes with it.
- Closure covers every Amazon site using the same login and cannot be undone; people with several accounts must repeat it for each.
Cancel your Audible membership
Done through the website. You need to sign in to your account first.
- Sign in to Audible UK and open your name menu, then View membership details.
- Choose Cancel membership and confirm; on mobile web there are extra confirm screens and a reason prompt.
- Look for the confirmation email Audible sends afterwards.
The organisation’s own page (opens in a new tab)
Limits to know about
- This ends the paid membership only; the Audible and Amazon accounts and their data stay.
- Credits and member benefits are lost at the end of the final billing cycle; titles bought with credits or cash stay in the library.
- Memberships bought through the App Store or Google Play are cancelled there, and deleting the app does not cancel.

Ask for your data to be erased

- Amazon handles deletion of personal information as part of the same signed-in request that closes the account, described on the closure help page.
- Follow the closure steps, then reply to the verification message within five days.
The organisation’s own page (opens in a new tab)
Limits to know about
- Amazon says it keeps some transactional records after closure, such as order, payment method and VAT details, for legal duties and fraud prevention.
- Audible UK help says Audible data cannot be deleted without also closing and deleting the Amazon account, and all titles in the Audible library are then lost.
Stop marketing
Done through the website or the app. You need to sign in to your account first.
- The privacy notice points to the Customer Communication Preferences page for email and other messages; sign in to change them.
- For in-app alerts, change the notification settings in the app or on your device.
- For interest-based adverts, use the Advertising Preferences page the notice links to.
The organisation’s own page (opens in a new tab)
Limits to know about
- The Audible notice says Audible emails are changed under Your Account then Email Preferences, and interest-based ads under Cookie Preferences.
- Both preference pages require sign-in, so their layout was not read.
Get a copy of your data (SAR)
Done through the website. You need to sign in to your account first.
- Use the Request your data page linked from the Amazon help article and sign in; Amazon says signing in is required for security.
- Choose Audible from the drop-down if you want Audible data, or the other categories you need.
- Submit the request and confirm it using the validation link in the email Amazon sends.
- Download the data from the secure link emailed when it is ready.
The organisation’s own page (opens in a new tab)
Limits to know about
- Much of the information is already viewable in Your Account, for example order history, addresses and payment methods.
- Audible UK help says the confirmation email must be answered within five days.
Correct inaccurate data
Done through the website. You need to sign in to your account first.
- Sign in and open Your Account, where Amazon says you can update your name, phone number, password, addresses, payment details and preferences.
- If something cannot be changed there, contact Amazon Customer Service from the help pages, describing what is wrong.
The organisation’s own page (opens in a new tab)
Limits to know about
- Amazon says it usually keeps a copy of the previous version of updated information for its records.
- Audible UK notice says Audible account details are in Your Account on the Audible site; the Audible editing screens were not read.
Complain about how data was handled
Done through email or the website. No sign-in is needed.
- Contact Amazon Customer Service from the help pages with a full description, or write to the data protection officer at the address printed in the privacy notice.
- If the reply is unsatisfactory, complain to the ICO; the ICO advises raising the concern with the organisation first.
The organisation’s own page (opens in a new tab) · Official contact address on the organisation’s page: eu-privacy@amazon.co.uk
Limits to know about
- The notice also names the Luxembourg authority as principal supervisory authority alongside the ICO.
- For Audible matters the Audible notice gives the data protection officer addresses privacy-eu@audible.co.uk and privacy-eu@audible.de, and names the ICO for Audible Limited.
Closing Amazon, cancelling Audible and Audible data
- Closing the Amazon account is permanent and includes Audible. Audible UK help says Audible cannot be closed on its own.
- Cancelling an Audible membership ends the paid membership only. The Audible and Amazon accounts and their data stay. Credits and member benefits are lost at the end of the final billing cycle, and titles bought with credits or cash stay in your library. Memberships bought through the App Store or Google Play are cancelled there, and deleting the app does not cancel.
- Audible data cannot be deleted without also closing and deleting the Amazon account, and all titles in the Audible library are then lost.
Erasure and what Amazon says it keeps
In the reviewed route, Amazon handles deletion of personal information as part of the same signed-in request that closes the account. There is no separate erasure form in what was read.
Amazon says it keeps some transactional records after closure, such as order, payment method and VAT details, for legal duties and fraud prevention. So a closed account is not the same as everything about you being removed.
Copies of your data and marketing preferences
Amazon’s Request your data page needs a sign-in, and you confirm the request using a validation link in an email. Audible UK help says that confirmation must be answered within five days. Much of the information is already viewable in Your Account, for example order history, addresses and payment methods.
Marketing choices are preference pages rather than a separate objection form: Customer Communication Preferences for email and other messages, Advertising Preferences for interest-based adverts, and, for Audible, Email Preferences and Cookie Preferences. These pages need a sign-in, so their layout was not read.
What to expect afterwards
What changes or is lost
- The Amazon account cannot be reached again and cannot be restored.
- Order history, invoices and proofs of purchase are lost.
- The Audible profile, memberships, credits and access to all Audible titles are lost.
- Prime memberships, Kindle content, Photos, Alexa registrations and gift card balances are lost.
- Closure applies on every Amazon site using the same login.
Confirming the closure request. Reply to the confirmation message within five days or the request is not verified.
What may be kept. Amazon says it keeps some transactional records such as orders, payment method and VAT details, and limited account information, for legal duties and fraud prevention.
Linked accounts. Amazon, Prime Video, Amazon Music, Audible, Kindle, Photos and Alexa share one Amazon login. Closing the Amazon account removes all of them, on every Amazon site using that login, and cannot be undone.
What TraceErase does here, and what you do
- You follow the organisation’s steps above on its own site or app, and send any request yourself. TraceErase does not log in to your accounts, does not hold your passwords and does not send requests to Amazon UK (with Audible UK) for you.
- TraceErase shows the guidance it checked and the date, prepares an editable draft request from a template, and keeps a record of what you sent and when, with provisional response dates worked out from the dates you enter.
- A directory listing is not proof that you have an account, and following these steps is not proof that the organisation has erased anything. The organisation decides its own reply.

Questions
What happens to my data when I close my Amazon account?
Amazon says the account cannot be reached again, and order history, invoices, Prime memberships, Kindle content, Photos, Alexa registrations, gift card balances and the Audible library are lost. Amazon also says it keeps some transactional records, such as order, payment method and VAT details, for legal duties and fraud prevention.
Can I get my Amazon account back after closing it?
Amazon’s help describes the closure as permanent and says the account cannot be restored. The five-day window is for confirming the request, not for changing your mind afterwards.
If I cancel Audible, does that delete my Audible data?
No. Cancelling ends the paid membership only; the Audible and Amazon accounts and their data stay. Audible data cannot be deleted without also closing and deleting the Amazon account.
Who is responsible for my Amazon and Audible data?
The Amazon UK notice names Amazon Europe Core S.a r.l., Amazon EU S.a r.l., Amazon Media EU S.a r.l. and Amazon Digital UK Limited as the controllers. The Audible UK notice names Audible Limited and Audible GmbH, jointly with other Amazon companies for some processing.
Keep track of your request
A free TraceErase account includes the directory, request drafts and a case record with dates. A plan is a separate, later choice, and creating an account does not start a purchase.
